By far, the most popular area to stay at in Baltimore is the Inner Harbor. Generally, the closer to the waterfront you get, the more popular the hotel. While there are a handful of budget hotels in the 2 -3 star range, most hotels in the Inner Harbor are in the upscale to luxury class. The popularity of the Inner Harbor makes a budget hotel room go for $150 to $200 a night. Upscale rooms begin at $200 a night and quickly go up. However you can expect a discount on rates during the Winter. In the Summer it is not uncommon to find that many Inner Harbor hotels are fully booked. On weeks when a popular convention is taking place or when the Yankees or Red Sox are in town you may find that all hotels in the Inner Harbor are sold out. For this reason it is recommended that you make your reservations as early as possible. If all of the hotels in the area are booked many people choose to stay at a hotel near the airport where many hotels offer shuttle services to the downtown area. For more information on Inner Harbor hotels refer to the Inner Harbor Hotel Guide.

Outside of the harbor / downtown Baltimore area, hotels are usually found in small clusters in various neighborhoods close to attractions and business districts. There are a couple hotels near Johns Hopkins University, Towson University, and in various neighborhoods such as Fells Point, Mount Vernon, and Mount Washington. But again, the BWI Airport area is the second most popular location for hotels in the Baltimore metro area. There are more than 20 hotels within a mile of BWI. The majority of them are along Nursery Road in Linthicum on the North side of the airport. They are your typical airport mid class hotels by major hotel chains -Marriott, Sheraton, Best Western, etc. Within this group there are quite a few suite / extended stay hotels catering to business travelers in town for a week or more.

There are also many boutique hotel choices that can be found throughout the city which give travelers options beyond standard hotel chains. Notable ones include the Pier 5 Hotel in the Inner Harbor, the Admiral Fell Inn of Fells Point, the Hopkins Inn near Homewood, and the Mount Vernon Hotel in the heart of the cultural district.
