The Mount Vernon District in Baltimore is home to some of the most beautiful 19th century town homes in the country. With the distinctive Washington Monument as the center piece of the district, Mount Vernon is easy to find. Look for the wonderful parks in the area that surrounds the 178 foot monument. The parks are filled with sculptures, fountains and benches.

The nightlife in the district runs the gamut from staid restaurants to gay and lesbian nightclubs. The entire district throbs with excitement when the sun sets. During the day, the district is filled with students from the world famous The Peabody Conservatory of Music, the Baltimore School for the Arts and students on trips to the Walter Art Gallery. Feel free to join in the excitement of the area no matter the time of day your schedule permits.

Many of Baltimore’s best restaurants can be found in the area. From casual dining to fine dining, expensive to inexpensive whatever your tastes you’ll find it in the Mount Vernon district. Many of the restaurants in the area offer lunch for businessmen and dinner for couples. Reservations are recommended for dinner.

If you are looking for opportunities to broaden your cultural horizons then you’ll find many of then when visiting the Mount Vernon district. The Baltimore Symphony Orchestra calls Mount Vernon home as does the Peabody Institute of Music. The first Roman Catholic cathedral in the United States has just been fully restored. Make a point to visit this national treasure when you come to Baltimore. If a play is your thing, then check out Center Stage to see some fine regional theatre. Finally, museums abound in the district. The Walter’s Art Gallery is open to all at no cost. The Maryland Historical Society offers a view at the beautiful furniture that was manufactured in Baltimore during the 18th century. The Eubie Blake Center offers a view into the life and times of some of the great Baltimore jazz musicians such as Cab Calloway, Billie Holliday and Eubie Blake.
